A big weekend for Abingdon School Rugby Club saw the U12 and U13 A and B sides in action away versus Caldicott Prep School with the rest of the school taking on St Edward’s School, Oxford in a block fixture.

Lower School rugby really picks up pace this half term and Saturday certainly was going to be a stern test against Caldicott straight up after half term. The U13 A XIII lost a very close match 25-20 showing terrific team spirit and displaying excellent skills under pressure. The U13 B XIII lost valiantly 50-5 to a very strong Caldicott. Our U12 A and B XIIs have come on hugely but this was always going to be a tough test. The As lost 40-10, effectively drawing the second half 10-10 after quite a few tries were conceded early. And the Bs lost 40-0 again showing real team spirit with the score not reflecting the skill set, improvement and endeavour the boys all put in. The Lower School look forward to Wednesday with matches versus Dragon School, Oxford.

Our U14s have really improved since the start of the season, becoming a lot better at retaining possession and improving their contact skills both in attack and defence. This showed in some much better performances at home on Cox’s Field. Our U14 D XV played St Edward’s C XV and won 27-10 . A mixed B/C XV won 30-5. And the A XV won 29-14 to cap off a fantastic 3rd year performance. The U15s D XV continue their amazing season beating a St Edward’s U15 C XV 43-7. The U15 B XV won 36-7 with the U15 A XV losing 26-17. Our U16s put in some quality performances away at St Edward’s. Unfortunately St Edward’s could not raise a C XV, however, our B XV played some exciting running rugby winning 22-10. Our A XV continue their terrific, still unbeaten run winning 40-17. Free flowing and fast in tempo with some excellent execution.

The seniors put in a great shift in exciting matches. Our 3rd XV won 55-12 and the 2nd XV won 34-5. Our 1st XV were up 12-10 at half time. It should have been more with missed opportunities. Unfortunately with 4 minutes of the game left St Edward’s slotted a penalty kick which resulted in the final score being 13-12.

The Rugby Club look forward to this Wednesday when the Lower School take on Dragon School. This Saturday sees the middle and senior school play Rugby School in a full block. The U14s and Seniors are away with the U15s and U16s at home.
