November 2019 | Abingdon Prep School

The clocks have gone back, the days are drawing in and it’s a lovely time of year at the Prep. The boys are busy, whether it’s in the classroom or outside at playtime enjoying the woods, the garden and of course the Fort or taking part in sports fixtures. Every boy from Year 3 upwards represents the School at rugby, football and cricket so everyone is involved no matter what their ability.

We now have over 100 Other Half activities tailored to age and interests; the range is very impressive, even if we do say so ourselves! The balance between the Other Half (extra-curricular) activities and our academic focus reaps enormous benefits both inside and outside the classroom. Activities take place at lunchtime, after school and occasionally before school. The majority are run by our own staff who enjoy getting to know the boys away from their studies. The belief that academic studies are just ‘one half’ of an education and the ‘Other Half’ is just as important is something that runs through the entire Abingdon Foundation from Reception to Upper Sixth.

The range and diversity of our Other Half is affirmation that there is no ‘typical Abingdon Prep boy’. From amazing avatars, choir and cookery to debating, fencing, archery and jazz band, there are numerous activities for everyone, no matter where their interests lie. “Get involved” is a message we are very keen for our boys to take on board, whether it is improving skills or trying something for the first time. ‘Get involved’ together with ‘work hard’ and ‘be kind’ are the three principles that we ask our boys to follow in everyday life at the Prep.

If you would like to find out more about the Other Half you can see all the activities available here and if you want to take a look at what the boys have been up to this term, here is our latest news.

Finally we look forward to seeing you at our next open morning on Tuesday 28 January 2020.
