February 2020 | Abingdon Prep School

There is huge excitement at Abingdon Prep following the planning permission for the new facilities. We are very much looking forward to the new Music School, science lab, and new spaces for CDT and the library. It will be a fantastic learning space for the boys who are all very enthusiastic about the new building opening in autumn 2021.

This term has been a lot of fun. There is rigorous preparation for the Year 8 academic scholarship exams to senior schools, which take place at the beginning of March, but we like to keep a good balance of academic preparation and relaxation and it is important that the boys have a chance to unwind. Happy boys make very good learners and our aim is to ensure that boys enjoy their lessons. A recent example is the Year 8s who are exploring sound in science and there’s a lovely video of them putting what they have learnt to the test!

There’s also a video of the boys trying a street dance taster session – it’s a new Other Half activity that we will be offering and if the taster session is anything to go by, it will be very popular!

Keen artists spent a Saturday before half term experimenting with drypoint etching and you can see their creations on the website. We regularly run art workshops on a Saturday, often with visiting artists, as it gives the boys a chance to spend more time on topics, such as sculpture, that can’t always be accommodated into the school day. The results are impressive.

Drama is very popular at Abingdon Prep and this term saw the Years’ 3 and 4 production of Hoodwinked which played to a packed house. Our flagship senior production of Lion King is taking shape and will be performed at the start of the summer term in the Amey Theatre at the Senior School.

One of the many highlights of the first half of term was our toys and games afternoon where Pre-Prep invited their grandparents to join them for a range of fun activities followed by tea. The hall was filled with laughter and it was much enjoyed by all involved.

Looking forward to the next half of this term, we are hoping for a bit more sunshine to accompany the many events we have planned. Our Year 7 boys will be off to Normandy for a week’s residential trip and there is the Musical and Drama Soiree for parents of Year 5 and the Scalextric night for all parents and boys to enjoy. The Easter Eggstravaganza takes place at the end of March and it is always a lovely way for the whole school to come together to relax and enjoy the end of term.

Our summer term open morning is on 6 May. It is one of the best times to visit the school. Please feel free to join us, even if you have been to our open mornings before. We will be able to show you the plans for the new Music School and the rest of the new development and share with you the new Pre-Prep playground that will be built in the holidays. If you would like to pre-book the open morning please follow this link.

We look forward to seeing you.
