The Yang Science Centre showed off its full capabilities as a centre of excellence for STEM teaching and learning when over 40 primary school teachers attended a full day of training in the half term break, run by the Ogden Trust's national team of primary science specialists. During four workshops in the YSC labs, the delegates explored ideas for teaching aspects of the Earth and Space topics covered in the primary curriculum. They were able to test and discuss hands-on ways of inspiring their pupils using ideas such as constructing model solar systems and building and flying air powered rockets. All the activities were rigorously linked to requirements to develop skills and knowledge in scientific enquiry in primary age pupils. During the lunch break, an exhibition in the Science Partnership Lab highlighted links with other STEM organisations such as Science Oxford, Bright Sparks and Practical Action. Feedback from delegates was very positive, with one, local primary STEM co-ordinator commenting 'Thank you for hosting a fabulous quality CPD event today. It was excellent! Very relevant, inspiring and easy to take away ideas and apply in the classroom'. The event was hosted by the Abingdon Science Partnership team assisted by a wide range of Abingdon School support staff, with the excellent catering being one of the highlights mentioned by many delegates.
