On Saturday, Marlborough played host to the first full athletics meet of the season. Despite the cold temperatures and lingering rain clouds the Abingdon squad arrived in high spirits, ready to compete on the track and in the field.

Middle Distance

The afternoon got underway for Abingdon with the 800m. A true test of speed and endurance, the race was run with multiple attacks from a strong Portsmouth Grammar School boy. These were matched by both Oliver Moody (U6) and Harry Venables (U6) who covered the surges. Oliver Moody was able to attack around the final bend and pull away into the lead, crossing the line in a time of 02:05. Harry Venables finished 3rd in a time of 02:08.

Off the back of a strong cross country season both Calum Steer (U6) and Rowan Miell-Ingram (3rd yr) won their 1500m races in convincing fashion. Calum clocked a time of 04:17, over 40 seconds faster than the 2nd placed finisher. Rowan finished in a time of 04:46.

Sprints

Alex Moss (U6) and Tom Butcher (U6) remained unbeaten on the track in the 100m, 200m, and 400m, recording the following times.

  • Alex Moss 100m – 11.1s, 200m – 22.7s
  • Tom Butcher 400m – 50s, 200m – 23.2s

In the junior sprints Daniel Burger and James Connelly recorded exactly the same time of 25.1s in the 200m. Daniel shows great promise in the 300m, winning the race in a time of 40.3s. A full 4 seconds faster than the 2nd place finisher.

Both the senior and junior teams crossed the line in 1st place in the 4x100m relay. However due to lane infringements and illegal baton change overs both teams were disqualified. Although disappointed not to take the win it demonstrated both teams have excellent speed. Now just to tidy up the changeovers!

Field Events

In the javelin Abingdon finished on the podium in all three age groups. Luka Shanidze (3rd yr) set the standard amongst the junior athletes by placing 1st with a throw of 27.7m. Josh Ponting (5th yr) finished 3rd in the intermediates with a throw of 30.01m. Chukuka Okonjo (L6) placed 2nd in the seniors with a throw of 30.4m, behind a very strong Winchester thrower who recorded 41.54m to take 1st place.

In the shot put Jack Tilley (3rd yr) placed 3rd in the juniors with a throw of 7.28m. In the senior shot put Harry Venables (U6) also placed 3rd with a throw of 8.75m.

Well done to all those involved.
