A group of five lower sixth physics students attended an All Party Parliamentary Engineering Group debate and lunch at the House of Lords. The title of the debate was “Hacking – can huge data breaches be prevented?” with speeches on the subject followed by questions from the floor. Professor Andy Hopper, Head of the Computer Science Department at Cambridge University spoke first on a recommendation paper written by the Royal Society on data breaches. This was followed by Dr Alastair Beresford, also from Cambridge University's computer security team who talked about incentives for companies to provide updates to software with James Hatch, Director of Cyber Services at BAE systems then giving the industry perspective. Questions from the floor came from engineers and scientists from many different companies including Boeing, Atkins, BAE Systems and Rolls Royce. The event was very much enjoyed by all who attended.
