Despite the recent cold weather, Abingdon School Football Club started the term with an inaugural block fixture against St John’s Leatherhead, a school with a growing football reputation.
Although Abingdon showed effort and commitment unfortunately the Abingdon U14 A and B sides both suffered defeats, however a tremendous 3-3 draw in the U14 C fixture demonstrates the pleasing depth in the year group. Similarly the U14s, the U15s and U16s found the going tough against strong opposition. However there was certainly a great deal of promise within the Abingdon performances, and with a little more composure, time and confidence the outcome could have been different. A particular highlight in the middle school, a 2-2 draw for the U16 Bs, a fantastic result considering the boys have been taking mock examinations all week!
Moving into the seniors and the 2nd XI went into their first fixture of the season with a lot of promise, and certainly didn’t disappoint. A 2-0 victory and a thoroughly deserved win given the performance of the Abingdon side.
Finally, moving on to the 1st XI fixture. Having conceded mid way through the 1st half the Abingdon side rallied well, moving the ball with confidence and gradually growing into the game. A fine finish from Patrick Leggett from a narrow angle left the game in the balance at 1-1, however a well executed set piece with 10 minutes to go allowed Joe Lilley time to nod home giving the Abingdon side a well earned away victory.
On this occasion, the results did not all go Abingdon’s way but the character and performances across the Club are certainly encouraging and we now look forward to the fixtures next weekend against St Edward’s School and Aylesbury Grammar School.
