On Saturday the intermediate squad travelled to Woodbridge School in Suffolk to compete in the national final of the ESAA Cross-country Cup.
The organisers designed an incredibly creative 4.2km course, using natural features around the school site with varied terrain, sharp inclines and off camber descents that tested even the most seasoned runners in the field. Fortunately the rain held off which kept the course fast and dry for the boys despite being the last race of the day.
The gun fired and the field set off at a blistering pace past the spectators that lined the barriers. Will d’Arcy moved up from 21st to 9th on the opening lap, with Rowan Miell-Ingram and Johnny James finding their rhythm half a dozen places behind. Henry Channon, Sebastian McAllan and Luis Vasconcelos fought hard to maintain their position in the main pack as it snaked it’s way through the technical parts of the course. Special mention must go to Will d’Arcy who was the first Abingdonian to cross the line in 13th place. A superb achievement for his first outing at the national competition and in such a competitive field.
The team finished 7th overall, cementing their place as one of the fastest cross-country teams in the country. Well done to all involved and a big thank you to those who came to support.
