Design & Technology Scholarships

Design & Technology Scholarships for entry in September 2020

Up to two Design & Technology Scholarships will be offered for entry in September 2020 to boys who have talent, aptitude and ability in product design and manufacture using resistant materials (wood, metal and plastics) and computer-aided design software.

A Design & Technology Scholarship is intended to give recognition to practical ability or potential within the field of product design, whether artistically based or more design directed.

Awards are made to candidates at 13+ (Third Year) and upon entry to the Sixth Form. Candidates must apply for either an Art award or a Design & Technology award. It is not possible for candidates to apply for both awards.

For external candidates, the winning of a Design & Technology award does not in itself secure a boy entry to the school; he must also meet the academic requirements for entrance in a separate examination appropriate to his age-group.

Internal candidates will be invited to participate by the Head following consultation with the Design & Technology Department.

Design & Technology Scholars are expected to make the most of the facilities of the School’s Design & Technology Department to pursue their particular interests and develop their skills both within and outside the taught curriculum to GCSE level and beyond.

Sixth form (16+) candidates must be studying Design & Technology at GCSE (or equivalent) level, be choosing an A Level in the subject and be willing to develop their skills both within and outside the A Level curriculum in order to be considered for a Design & Technology Scholarship.

The Head of Design & Technology, Mr Dan Hughes, welcomes informal contact with potential candidates by emailing dan.hughes@abingdon.org.uk.

All awards are reviewed annually, and are subject to satisfactory academic progress and behaviour. Continued tenure of Design & Technology awards will be at the discretion of the Head of Department, and dependant upon continuing study of the subject.

The Scholarship carries an entitlement to a nominal fee remission of £300 per year. However, as is the case for all pupils, there is an option to apply for further financial assistance through a means-tested bursary.
