The New Boat House

7 July 2003

Good morning America, Canada, Germany, Denmark, England, Wales and SCOTLAND (the writer is Scottish). That is the multi national nature of this project.

The school term has finished. You can tell. Mr Mike Webb is now “Mike” to the boys working on site: Felix Hemsley, Nick Hopkins and Nick Brodie. Teachers now lighthearted at the prospect of a long vacation (I hear groans of denial, but we all know you now “rest” for two months.) pop in to have a look at this magnificent wooden structure.

Bill Potter (school rowing coach 1955-1994) arrives to see his name being carved JUST IN TIME…. we nearly gave him 40 years service instead of 39. Stop that chisel…it’s 55 not 54!

All the crew are settling into a good routine now. The meticulous planning is paying off and everything is going to plan. Norman Guiver (project manager) is in seventh heaven until, the portaloo gets blocked. OH Sh…..Shucks.

Moira Brodie arrived on site today. Nice of you to arrive at last, Moira. Roll your sleeves up and get on with some work.

Moira has to meet and talk with NORA. Nora is a star (very small, very young and very capable). She is from North Carolina and is the lady who is sorting out all the name carvings, which Moira has received from beam sponsors. This is an enormous task involving some 1,500 letters which have to be hand carved. If you visit the site, look out for Nora and give her lots of encouragement. She is overwhelmed with her task.

Special visit today from Mike Martin, master in charge of rowing! Hope you like your new boathouse Mike? He loves it. Mike has been dreaming of having a new boathouse for years. He still cannot believe this is not a dream.
