Since September, four teams of lower sixth students have spent two hours of their extended lunchtime each week working on the Blott-Matthews Engineering challenge.
The challenge this year was to come up with a way to transport a one ton load from the North Pole to the South Pole without picking any equipment up on the way or dropping it off. Teams were required to submit a report in February and then attended the final presentation day last weekend.
The day started with two excellent presentations from ARUP engineers about current projects they have been working on. There was then a poster fair where students had the opportunity to compare their designs with those from other groups.
The teams were then quizzed in detail on many aspects of their previously submitted report; in particular the accuracy of the calculations. Abingdon teams were very successful in the final placings with Team Apex placed third and Team Polar Reach winning the event.
Congratulations to all the students who took part as the solutions were excellent and also to Mrs Griffiths for leading the challenge over the past two terms.
