Weekly Mailing

We aim to send an e-mail each Friday at 5.00 pm which provides a link to that day's Weekly Mailing. All editions of Weekly Mailing may be found on the website, under the News tab. The search facility at the top right of every page can be useful to find archived items. We would encourage those who missed the link to view last Friday's Weekly Mailing.

Saturday 10 September

Tomorrow sees our first block fixture of the new academic year in the form of Rugby against King's College School, Wimbledon. All details have been posted on the online calendar at http://calendar.abingdon.org.uk. An attachment has been uploaded for each of the year groups which has details of each match, including venues, starting times, staff contact numbers and much more. All pupils are to come to School in full school uniform and bring their playing kit with them. This applies to those boys who are travelling direct to the venues as well. Ordinarily, we would encourage all boys to travel with the rest of the team, but in exceptional circumstances, we are happy to grant permission. Requests should be made in writing to the relevant teachers in charge of your son's team. If such permission is granted to travel independently, we require him to be there an hour ahead of the start time. Any queries can be directed to the Director of Sport & PE at andrew.hall@abingdon.org.uk.

Saturday Bus Service

This is a reminder that the Saturday Bus Service is in operation from tomorrow 10 September. There are six buses running from key locations. Please ensure that your son is at the bus stop at least 5 minutes before the scheduled departure times. There is no charge for this service and parents do not have to book their sons in. We will pick up whoever is waiting. Please note that this is a one way service only. As is custom, parents make their own arrangements to pick up their sons after the fixtures, and are actively encouraged to come and support the matches and enjoy the hospitality on offer.

Dropping off and collection of pupils by car

Parents are reminded not to drop off or collect boys from the Bursary area, or Lower Field Car Park, please. This is because the area is already busy with pedestrians, pupils and school traffic. We therefore ask that parents drop and collect boys in Park Crescent, operating a one-way system travelling clockwise past the private housing on the west of Albert Park, and ending up near the boarding houses. The Crescent ends at a cross roads, where halting is obligatory on these private roads.

Wheel clamping operates on Park Road and Park Crescent, so you are advised not to leave a car unattended.

Open Day: Saturday 1 October

Open Day runs from 9.30 until 12.30. All boys are expected to attend and should arrive at School no later than 8.55 am to register before beginning their Open Day activities. Request for absence on this day should, as usual, be made to the housemaster, as for a single weekday absence.

For boys who use the joint bus service, all the morning routes will be operating the weekday schedule running 30 minutes later than usual. For the return journey, the weekday 5.20 pm service will depart on all usual routes from the coach park at 1.00 pm.

Music

Please find attached the following from the Music Department. In particular it is hoped that lots of parents will wish to join the Choral Society with St Helen's School for a performance of the Verdi Requiem, 26 November. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings at Abingdon, 7.30 - 9.00 pm. Please also find attached the Music Calendar for this Michaelmas Term.

Confirmation

Next term a bishop of the Church of England, which is part of the world-wide Anglican Communion of churches, will come to confirm boys in our Chapel. Confirmation is open to boys, of all years, who seek the adult life of full membership of the Church, including receiving Holy Communion. Those who have not been baptized or christened, will be baptized in the Confirmation service. Weekly classes of preparation begin in Chapel at 1.10 pm on Friday 16 September. Boys interested, even if unsure, should see the Chaplain as soon as posible.

Ski Tour

There are just a couple of places left on the ski tour to Jay Peak in Northern Vermont, Saturday 14 December  to Sunday 22 December. Please contact alf.mansfield@abingdon.org.uk for more information.

Head's Receptions

Over the summer parents should have received an invitation to the Head's Receptions, which are listed in the calendar. Those still to come are: Sixth Form: Tuesday 13 September, 6.00 pm - 7.30 pm; Fourth and Fifth Years: Monday 19 September, 6.00 pm - 7.30 pm. Drinks and canapes will be served in the Sports Centre Hospitality Suite.

If you have yet to reply and wish to come please e-mail heads.pa@abingdon.org.uk
