Notices:

Lower 6th parents and boys: UCAS1 evening: Friday 24 February 2017, 7pm.

All Lower Sixth boys and their parents/guardians are invited to an evening of introductory talks about the university admissions process on FRIDAY 24 FEBRUARY 2017 in the Amey Theatre to start at 7pm. We host speakers from a Russell Group university to give advice about admissions from a university perspective, from Oxford and Cambridge Universities to describe the particular issues in their application processes, and a panel of Upper Sixth boys talk about their own university application experiences followed by a question-and-answer session. The evening is due to end around 9.30pm. Further details to follow.

Updating the school database, and  Data Check Form final reminder

If you have changed or are planning to change your contact information, please do ensure that you inform the School. Our database needs to remain as up-to-date as possible in case of an emergency. Any amendments can be emailed to [email protected].  Thank you to all those who have sent in the data check forms originally issued in the Summer Term, and for those who have responded to individual reminders.  This is the final reminder.

Music
  • Music Society Strings Masterclass with Levon Chilingirian – Wednesday 30 November at 6pm, CMR. Parents are warmly invited to come and hear the internationally renowned Armenian violinist, Levon Chilingirian working with some of our senior string players at the school. Levon is a regular visitor and a firm friend of the Music Department. He is an experienced and exciting teacher and this should be a must for any string player and their family. Admission is free thanks to our generous Music Society.
  • The Christmas Concerts – Wednesday 7 and Friday 9 December at 7pm, Amey Theatre. This year we revert to our usual plan of giving the same Christmas Concert twice in order to accommodate all those who wish to attend. For those new to the school, please be aware that the concerts are identical and that we are now nearly sold out for the Friday performance. The concert includes the following ensembles – 1st, 2nd and Chamber Orchestras, First, Brass and Big Bands, Gospel and the whole 1st Year Choir. Please book tickets in advance to be sure of success.

Revision leave dates – Summer 2016

Fifth year: revision leave begins Friday 5 May, 5.20pm
Upper Sixth:  revision leave begins Friday 19 May, 1pm

Notes:

Fifth Year: The 5th year will, as usual, be offered optional study leave help for the first weeks of their study leave in the form of subject clinics and supervised study rooms.  More detail on this will be given before they go on leave.

Upper Sixth: Some Upper Sixth boys will be taking AS units in the summer in subjects that were reformed only from September 2016  (e.g. Geography, Classics, RS, Music) or are still to be reformed (e.g. Maths & Further Maths, Philosophy, DT) and it may be that these fall before official study leave starts on Friday 19 May.  In such cases, for an afternoon exam, boys will be permitted to take the morning as study leave.  No study leave is granted the day before a morning exam.

Lower Sixth: Given the 6th form curriculum has changed so substantially, there will be very little sitting of AS units for the boys in the Lower Sixth and that will be limited to subjects that have not yet been reformed (e.g. Government & Politics, DT).  Abingdon does not offer the new 'stand alone' AS qualifications in reformed subjects. The School will hold its own Lower Sixth internal exams in the week after half term in the summer and will then issue both exam grades and 'guidance grades' (projections towards A Level) to boys and parents to assist in the choosing of which subject (if any) to drop for Upper Sixth and to help with research into university options.

Coach park: car parking and drop-off

For health and safety reasons, cars should, please, stay out of the coachpark during morning and afternoon drop-off and collection times, ie 8.00-9.00am and 4.00-5.30pm.
