The English Department welcomed Ash Dickinson, up and coming performance poet, to Abingdon for the day. He ran workshops for first, second, third, fourth, and lower sixth form English classes, performing his own poems and getting everyone to pen some verses of their own. Highlights included Ash's performance of his own poem 'The Confused Man' (the rest of the poem consists of the word 'WHY?'), and 'Free-Range Eggs' ('What's the point / They can't go anywhere / They don't have legs.').
Here's a first draft of a poem written by one of the sixth form during a 20 minute session:
HELP
Why are you sat here with me?
What is it that you see?
The dirty looks, the awkward stares
That's what I get
But you don't seem to care.We listen to Bon Iver and drink cups of tea.
But still I think you're too good for me.
Help!
You laugh at my texts
But yet I still feel vexed
Inside it starts to eat away
How to find all the words for what I want to say
"You're too good for me"
"Don't be silly"
And with that I drop my cash
Before making a dashTowards the world outside.
Maybe I'm not up to this dating lark.
I would rather fall asleep with you in the park.Someone Help!
