Religious Studies is a challenging academic subject that requires pupils to learn and understand difficult material and then to argue their viewpoint clearly. It is valuable in developing skills in writing and thinking and expressing an idea clearly and persuasively.
It helps pupils to interpret information and to assess its importance. Pupils need to be ready to consider new ideas and to argue a case. They do not need to have any particular religious conviction or any religious conviction at all. Religious Studies includes the study of fundamental questions about humanity and allows students to make informed personal responses to difficult contemporary issues.
Religious studies is compulsory throughout the lower and middle school. In the fifth year, some pupils take the optional GCSE, and the rest take the 'short course' Religious Education GCSE (Edexcel), equivalent to, and shown on the certificate as, half a GCSE.
