Year 6 CDT work becomes more technical as boys undertake to design and make a fairground ride using a simple pulley belt system. Understanding how cogs work also feature and Lego construction kits are used. Woodwork skills become extended as they use a wider variety of hand and power tools. Simple free wheeling vehicles are made using the machinery giving the models a professional finish. An aeroplane study in the Spring Term encompasses handcrafted balsa wood planes, making and flying their own kite, holding a paper aeroplane competition (highly competitive), designing logos for tail fins and making a model plane out of recycled material.
Later on in the year, the boys study the eaves structure in buildings and make a model village out of wood and card. The textile work is much admired this year as the boys design and make a wacky soft toy monster, the fluffier the better!
Christmas activities are not forgotten even though the boys are older. Pop up cards, glass lanterns and a flat piece of textile felt is made into a wall hanging. The Christmas Bazaar again sees the boys designing and constructing their own games and running their own charity fund raising stall.
