Abingdon Preparatory School

Year 6

ENGLISH

The Year 6 examination is made up of two papers. One is a comprehension paper the other a composition paper.

MATHS

The maths exam will consist of two 45 minute papers and a short mental test.
After half term the lessons will be dedicated to revision of weak areas and practice on exam style questions.
Before half term boys will be given a revision sheet containing the topics we have covered this year along with some sample questions to tackle during the half term break. The most effective way to revise for a maths exam is to attempt questions. Boys should use their textbook as a good source of questions, continue to practice their times tables to ensure they are secure and use websites to provide some practice.

SCIENCE

Good guides for what you need to revise for your science exam are the success criteria given to you for each topic. Here is a brief summary of them.

Forces
Types of forces, measuring forces using a spring balance, stretching springs. Types of forces, gravity, weight, air resistance, friction, upthrust. Units of force (newtons). How to show the direction of forces with arrows, balanced and unbalanced forces. The effect of different surfaces on the force of friction, how friction effects stopping distances. How a parachute works, the effect of levers. Floating and upthrust. Levers and simple calculation of turning force.

Materials
The three states of matter (solids, liquids and gases), what they are like and how the particles are arranged. The properties of solids, liquids and gases. Air pressure,

Solvents and solutions
How to use a Bunsen burner safely, the types of flames.
How water changes from ice to liquid water to steam and back, the names of each of these processes (melting, evaporating, condensing and freezing).
What effects how things dissolve, know the meaning of solution, solvent, solute, soluble and insoluble. Saturated solutions. Using different solvents to dissolve things. How to compare the purity of distilled water compared to tap and seawater
How to separate mixtures eg rock salt
Purifying water by distillation, chromatography.

Electricity and magnetism
Types of circuits, parallel and series and the differences between them. Measuring the current in series and parallel circuits using ammeters. Switches, AND and OR circuits. What is meant by conductors and insulators, Resistance wire and the effect of length on the current? Symbols and use of lamp, cell, switch, variable resistor, ammeter, motor. LED, LDR, fuse.
Attraction and repulsion between magnets, comparing the strength of a magnet. How you made an electromagnets, what affects its strength.

Cells
Be able to draw and label an animal cell and a plant cell and say what the job of each part is. How to use a microscope and how to prepare a slide of a cell for viewing.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

The exam questions are short and based on work done in R.E. exercise books.
The key areas are Islam, Christianity, Heroes and Power and Jewish Way of Life.
All pages need to be looked at carefully. The answers are on the pages!
In Islam, check key words and spellings. Look in detail at The Five Pillars of Islam as it is central to Muslim life.
In Christianity, look at a bible and remind yourself how we looked up a few books, chapters and verses.
Find a children's bible and read about Moses, Saul and David to remind yourself of the stories we did.
Look at the DVD display outside Year 6S and remind yourself about David and Goliath.
Read about the Easter Story. Think about the character's feelings.
Think about the Jewish Way of Life. What questions are likely to be asked?
Remember to read exam questions carefully.
If detail is asked for, check how many points you can gain and then aim to include that number of facts in your answer.
