Last Friday Abingdon Prep hosted their 7th annual Under 13 Rugby Sevens Tournament. There were several schools in attendance including; Pitsford, Cothill House, Christ Church Cathedral School and Beachborough, as well as our own A and B VII. In line with the  RFU regulations the festival was run as a ‘waterfall’ festival with all teams playing each other in a round-robin format.

Despite being beaten in all of their matches, the APS Bs grew in confidence and showed greater character as the competition progressed. In their final match against Pitsford they finally managed to cross the ‘white wash’ to a rapturous applause from the spectators. They will have gained a great deal from the experience.

The APS As won their first match convincingly against the APS Bs by 56 – 0 and went in to their next match with renewed confidence. However two narrow defeats followed against Pitsford (24 – 28) and Beachborough (19 – 28). A narrow victory against Christ Church Cathedral School (14 -7) and a loss against Cothill (19 – 26), which could have gone either way, completed the competition. The APS As handling was incredible all afternoon as they retained possession for long periods of time. They were in my opinion the best team to watch! However, their lack of pace in this unforgiving game cost them in a number of close matches.

Both teams showed great character during the afternoon and the boys were a great credit to themselves and the school.
