The Summer Concert at a packed Amey Theatre, as always, featured a mix of music old and new from instrumental ensembles, choirs and soloists who all gave fantastic performances to create a truly memorable evening of superb music.

Orchestra opened proceedings with The Blue Danube, followed by Junior Choir singing Heatwave, by Kevin Stannard. Y3 and Y4 sang three songs from Musical Director Debbie Rose’s Turn Again Whittington with some great actions, and Chamber Choir sang the dreamy Summertime by Gershwin. Harrison’s composition from Music Tech Club – Dark Suns made way for Simon Currie’s APS Funk from Jazz Band. Y5 brought the first half to a close with Mr Mistoffelees from Cats and Debbie’s own song about Oxford patron saint St Frideswide.

Our Y8 leavers also featured: Alasdair on trombone, Freddie on clarinet played a Michael Nyman piece from The Piano and Henry a Debussy piano prelude. Also a quartet of Henry, Robin, Hugo and Freddie performed Debbie’s setting of For the Beauty of the Earth.

The second half started with Y8 striding through the audience with percussion to play a rhythm-perfect samba, followed by Guitar Group’s La Bamba. Y7 & Y8 sang Africa by Toto, complete with stunning hand percussion rain-storm at the start. Folk Club and Senior Choir followed with two songs each, with ELO’s Mr Blue Sky continuing the summer weather theme! Orchestra, Staff and older boys came together to perform a Medley for Crispin – James Bond and Star Wars of course, followed by F1 theme The Chain with ‘The Stig’ and Tottenham Hotspur song. Finally everyone came together to sing Brian Setzer’s Stray Cat Strut.

Thank you to Director of Music Debbie Rose, Lenka, visiting music teachers, accompanist Bethan, staff and all involved who made the concert such a success.
