2 July 2015

As usual the annual Summer Concert was performed to a packed auditorium at Abingdon’s Amey theatre on a very warm July evening. All the instrumental ensembles were showcased beginning with Orchestra, who opened the concert with a rousing performance of Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance. Brass Group blended their sounds well in their rendition of Mini March; Jazz Band opened the second half of the concert with Tequila, involving audience participation! This was followed by Guitar Group, who entertained us with In the Summertime by Mungo Jerry. The Year 8 music scholars all featured as soloists: David gave an impressive piano performance of Burgmuller’s L’Orage, James played Malcolm Arnold’s Sonatina op.29, 2nd movement lyrically, Alec wowed us with an unaccompanied trombone study by Bourgeois, Raffy played Allegro Giocoso by Geraedts with a very sweet tone and our final soloist was Joe who played Saint-Saens famous piece The Swan on the cello with tremendous sensitivity. Years 3 and 4 sang Bright Canary Yellow Gipsy Caravan from their production of Wind in the Willows, as well as Under the Sea; they sang with gusto and clear harmony. Years 5 and 6 made a terrific sound with Let it Go from Frozen and Electricity from Billy Elliott. Years 7 and 8 performed Thriller, complete with ‘creepy voice-over!’ No concert would be the same without our own staff choir, Glee Club, who came together to sing Bridge over Troubled Water; Junior and Senior Choirs also featured, singing Wade in the Water and The Rhythm of Life respectively and the whole school came together for the grand finale, I’m a Believer, which brought the house down. This was a very rousing end to a fabulous concert. I shall miss the boys greatly and will never forget my time at Abingdon Prep School.
