Our annual trip to Sulgrave Manor was another great success.
The Manor House near Banbury was built in 1539 by Lawrence Washington, an ancestor of George Washington, the first President of the USA.
Although the house was much bigger in its time, it is still packed with a wealth of Tudor artefacts and built in the Tudor style.
We spent time exploring the kitchens, dining room and numerous bedrooms: Lawrence Washington did have eleven children!
We were all particularly bemused by the stories of burning spit boys and how babies were often hung on the walls to prevent the rats gouging out their eyes.
On arrival the boys were dressed in Tudor costumes-well done to those brave boys who volunteered to wear the clothes of poor Tudor girls. Throughout the day they all had plenty of opportunity to get into the spirit of things, especially with the making of our own play about the Tudor monarchs.
As a teacher you can make History exciting using a variety of teaching resources and aids, but there is nothing like visiting a place like this to really reinforce and enhance their understanding.
A fantastic day with fantastic boys who behaved impeccably.
