The senior production, Michelangelo, played to packed houses on Thursday and Friday of last week.
The boys rose to the occasion, delivering two stunning, high-quality performances. The audience was transported back in time to the Italian Renaissance, courtesy of some modern-day tourists and their guide, and duly learned about what life was like in Florence during the late 15th century.
There was action, fighting, comedy, dance, toe-tapping songs sung with gusto but also with finesse, and all performed in an array of colourful, eye-catching costumes made by Sharon Collins.
This was a production of contrasts, from the imitation Italian arias to the lively Pope Rock, from Francesco’s bravery to Leonardo da Vinci’s crazy genius, and from Savonarola’s demise to the drunken marble cutters at Carrara. The boys really took ownership of this play, with script and music by Debbie, and Simon’s direction encouraged them to develop their own characters.
