Abingdon Preparatory School

Science Spring Term

Year 8S

The boys will begin a review of the electricity and forces topics including moments, pressure and speed. We will then have finished the syllabus and will revise separation techniques and chemical reactions The boys will continue to practice scholarship questions. After the scholarship exams the boys will work towards their Bronze Crest Awards. Here they will do an investigation in a topic of their choice. The aim is to develop their independent scientific enquiry skills.

Year 8

The boys will begin with a topic on energy; this will be followed by a review of electricity and magnetism. Followed by a review of the forces topics, including moments, pressure and speed. Followed by a review of separation techniques including fractional distillation. There will be an opportunity to revise and do practice CE questions.

Year 7

The boys will complete the topic of metal reactions. This will be followed by density. They will then study the human body, including the topics of food and digestion, breathing and respiration, movement and keeping fit and healthy. They will be carrying out a number of investigations about the body system and have the opportunity to see some pigs' lungs. This will be followed by a short topic on microbes.

Year 6

The boys will be completing the topic of materials and their properties. They will then be studying electric circuits with the opportunity for a lot of hands on practical work. This will be followed by the topic of magnets. A short topic on light will then be studied. Again there will be some overlap with the Key stage 3 syllabus in preparation for common entrance.

Year 5

Complete topic on changing state - introduce reversible and irreversible changes. Investigate the properties of gases and their uses. Revisit mixtures and dissolving by separating materials through filtering, and evaporation. Plan and investigate factors which help solids dissolve more quickly. Revisit irreversible changes with familiar chemicals. Research Space and the key planets; appreciate the effects of orbits on time and seasons.

Year 4

Forces: The children will explore the topic of forces, with a particular emphasis on friction. Electricity: They will then undertake investigations to identify electrical conductors and the factors affecting the brightness of a bulb. The children will need to use and apply what they have learnt to create their own electronic quiz board.

Year 3

Light and Shadows: The children will be able to identify and categorise different sources of light. They will carry out a variety of investigations which explore how light travels in straight lines, how shadows are formed and how some materials reflect light. Magnets and Springs. They will review their knowledge of forces and develop their understanding of how magnets attract and repel against other materials. They will spend time looking at springs; where they are found and how they work.

Year 2

Grouping and changing materials: The children should be able to name and identify common materials and know whether they occur naturally or are man-made. They will begin to look at how materials change as a result of heating and cooling. Forces and movement : The children will gain an understanding of how forces (pushes and pulls) help things move and change shape. They will carry out simple investigations which will involve making measurements and recording data.

Year 1

Light and dark: The children will be able to identify light sources and understand the significance of the Sun. They will be able to explain why and how shadows are formed and why some materials and objects reflect light. Sorting and using materials: They will be able to describe a variety of materials using scientific vocabulary. Both as a class and in small groups they will carry out simple investigations to find out whether materials will float or sink and if they are magnetic.
