Harvest Festival

Harvest 010

11 October 2011

Pre-prep participated in the first harvest festival at Kingston Bagpuize Church on Tuesday afternoon. The children arrived in the minibus with their harvest offerings of pasta, biscuits, cakes, even runner beans fresh from the garden! The boys carefully carried their donations up the aisle where they were received by the Reverend Pickering and a member of the congregation to make a wonderful harvest display.

The goods will be distributed to the Kingsmoor Day Centre in Hinton Waldrist, a day care centre for elderly people, particularly those with Alzheimer's or dementia, which is a very good cause.

After singing the Big Red Combine Harvester song, the boys in Reception showed their lovely paintings of the farm fields and a scarecrow. Year Two then reminded us about the meaning of harvest using the words: share, eat, have, starve and rest; rearranging themselves to make the words and speaking about how we should remember those less fortunate than ourselves. Year One sang about many different furitws and vegetables in the song Cauliflowers Fluffy and then showed off artwork of our favourite fruits and vegetables.Roxzan reminded us about how we marked the special occasion of Peace Day and Year Two led the singing in the Peace like a river song.

The Reverend gave a practical demonstration about how children in Uganda, Africa do not have the luxury of turning on a tap for their drinking water. Y2 boys were challenged to pick up and carry containers of water, to give examples of the weight carried by children some as young as 5. Examples of the river water used for drinking were shown; this really helped the boys to appreciate how lucky we are. To end our Harvest celebration, all the boys enjoyed singing the Harvest Rock 'n' Roll and showing off their dancing moves, and jiving back out of the church.

Thank you to all the parental support, it was great to see so many of you there; also to the Reverend and parishioners of Kingston Bagpuize for allowing us to come to visit the beautiful church which we hope will now become a regular event on the Pre-prep calendar.
