EYFS Curriculum Spring Term

Communication, Language and Literacy

The children to continue to work on the Read Write Inc. phonics scheme.  Revise and learn 44 Simple sounds and correct letter formation, read and write ditties and then start Green books - Level 1.    Children will start emergent writing in play scenarios - role play in home corner and outdoors. They will have a lesson of independent writing with some direction/starting point and a handwriting lesson each week.  Children will listen to stories and poems, learn and say rhymes.  Group discussions, news time, show and tell circle time will promote listening skills and expressive language skills. 

Mathematical Development

Children to continue to follow Abacus Maths Scheme - looking at numbers to15 and then to 20 - number recognition and correct  formation,  rote counting and touch counting - use 100 square and a variety of counting objects. Simple addition and subtraction, language of position,  compare weights of two objects, firstly by feel then using scales,  compare capacities of two containers.  The children will learn to recognize coins from 1p to £1 and will learn to count money.  We will begin to use the language of direction and will look at time - recognising the hours on an analogue clock. 

Knowledge and Understanding of
the World

The children will learn about Winter and the changes we can observe in our environment during the change of season.  They will learn about the North and South Poles - Arctic and Antarctic animals, Intuits and igloos.  They will find out about a number of festivals and celebrations, like Chinese New Year, Valentine's Day, Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday.  After the half term break, we will welcome Spring and its seasonal changes and the wonder of new life.  The topic of pets and the work of a vet will be incorporated in this theme and the children will learn about Mothers' Day and Easter celebrations 

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

The children will continue develop their self help skills and sense of independence and responsibility.  They will continue to focus on the Golden rules and school values.  They will be encouraged to discuss and share ideas and feelings about emotions, moral values and celebrations.  The topic will cover areas where the children will learn how people cope in different living conditions and they will look at people in our community who help us. There will be opportunities for much of this learning to be played out in role play scenarios in the home corner. 

Physical Development

The children will have 1 P.E. 1 swimming and 2 Games lessons each week with specialist sports staff. Their gross motor development will be further developed during free play in the playground, three play times each day.  Their fine motor development will be focussed on in classroom activities - they will have plenty of opportunities to manipulate small and large objects, threading, cutting, gluing etc. 

Creative Development

The children will have lots of opportunity for free creative expression with paint, drawing and modelling materials. Junk modelling and chance for 3D construction will be regularly planned and construction toys will be av.  They will also be encouraged to participate in directed Art activities too. They will make Chinese lanterns and  dragons and will try Chinese writing with writing brushes.  They will make Mothers' Day and Easter cards. There will be two performing arts lessons each week, and a cooking session every other week.
