Portraiture Galleries Trip

9 November 2010

4th year (Year 10) GCSE art and Design students travelled to London to see portraits at two galleries. The Courtauld Institute Gallery holds a very fine collection of Impressionist and post-impressionist work but our focus was the small but beautifully displayed group of portraits by Paul Cézanne. His Card Players brought together 4 major paintings, supporting studies and drawing. At the National Portrait Gallery the mix was more eclectic with work ranging from the traditional portraiture of kings and queens to more contemporary interpretations of today's celebrities. Both exhibitions were thoroughly enjoyed by the boys who were able to draw and make notes in front of the work, and are developing portraits in the current studio work.
