The aims are five-fold:
- Fitness: To instil the importance of a healthy body and mind. The aspects of fitness worked on are mobility, strength and stamina.
- Social and Moral: Through small sided games and group activities, we encourage boys to mix and co-operate. Through competition, we aim to instil the correct attitudes towards winning and losing and develop the pupils self-discipline. Boys should develop a sense of purpose, confidence, politeness, perseverance, initiative and independence.
- Cognitive: To instil knowledge and understanding of the rules, skills, tactics and aims of the various activities in which they are involved during the programme.
- Leisure: By providing a wide variety of sports, we hope to encourage pupils to continue their participation in those they enjoy most, outside school and once they have left school.
- Aesthetic: To encourage pupils to appreciate and evaluate form and movement as well as giving them the opportunity to express their creative ability.

There are three full-time physical education specialists whose teaching is spread across all year groups. Compulsory PE lessons are integrated within the academic timetable in the middle school giving individual pupils, especially the less able, access to specialist teaching. Within PE lessons a wide and balanced range of activities is offered including some minor sports which are not usually offered during the normal sporting programme.
Details on individual sports may be found under the Other Half.
