OA golf day

12 May 2009

We had another very successful meeting this year when 23 OA's attended our 25th meeting. It was a lovely day, a perfect temperature for playing twenty-seven holes. Frilford Heath was in superb condition, as always, and there was some very good golf played.

The morning nine holes was played on the Blue Course - the toughest opening four holes I have experienced. We played for the Trenaman Trophy, which was won by John Edelsten with 19 points. Alongside this, we played Secret Partners. The winners of this were Stuart Hammond and John Edelsten with 34 points on countback from Alan Pezaro and Barrie Whiteford also with 34 points and third place were David Goodwin and myself with 33 points.

We all enjoyed an excellent Frilford Ploughman's lunch before attacking 18 holes in the afternoon on the formidable Red Course. We were playing for the Roysse Cup. Again the scores were close with Barrie Whiteford on 36 points coming out on top. Runner up was Chris Davies, Headmaster of Abingdon Preparatory School, who we were delighted to see, with 35 points. Third was Stuart Hammond with 33 points, 4th was Henry Painton and 5th was David Goodwin.

A special prize for the eldest OA playing (a picture of a golf scene) was donated by Bob Pezaro, who was unable to attend - the first meeting he has missed. This went to John Edelsten.

In the evening we all sat down for a splendid dinner. There was a lot of friendly banter and a good time was had by all. The prize-giving followed dinner the meeting broke up at about 9.30pm.

Thanks to all those attending and a big thanks to Frilford Heath Golf Club for allowing us to hold our annual meeting on their beautiful complex.

Next year's meeting will be held on the 11th May 2010. Please make a note.

13 May 2008

Twenty-one OAs gathered at Frilford Heath Golf Club to play in the 24th OA Golf Day. The weather was lovely and the courses were in superb condition.

The morning’s round was played over the first nine holes of the Blue Course and we were playing in two competitions. The first was an individual Stableford playing for the Trenaman Trophy (in memory of my brother, Ian), which was won by John Edelsten (1952). John said a few nice words about Ian and how pleased he was to be the first winner. The second morning competition was secret partners, which was won by John Edelsten and John Dunthorne (1965). In second place were George Brown (1956) and Mike Neilan (1960), followed by Paddy Viney (1955) and David Letley (1966), and in 4th place were Philip Candy (1957) and Stuart Hammond (1976).

The afternoon round was played over the 18 holes of the Red Course – a tough examination of anybody’s game. We were competing for the Roysse Cup. The weather remained lovely and the scores were very close. Being decided on countback, the winner was David Evans (1959) and the runner-up was Julian Shellard (1971). Julian gave a wonderful exhibition of powerful driving and delicate chips, but on the day, David’s consistent play saw him home. In 3rd place was Stuart Hammond, followed by Mike Morris (1965) and in 5th was Mike Neilan. In the evening, after golf, there followed dinner and prize giving. David Evans said a few words of appreciation and, finally, Bob Pezaro (1947) won the Oldest Members Prize. Everyone had a very enjoyable day.
