On Friday 4 November a dozen OAs of mixed vintages gathered for another of the occasional series of informal London lunches. Bangers Bar and Grill in the City gave us an excellent meal in a private room, with plenty of Rioja to lubricate our trips down memory lane.

Reinvigorated in March 2011, the hope is to continue this series of events with two gatherings each year. The next will be an evening event, taking place at Chez Gérard Chancery Lane on Thursday 22 March 2012.

Invitations will be circulated in the new year but tickets will soon be available online for early booking.

If anyone has thoughts on where we could go next autumn, then please get in touch. Maybe a West-End spot for a change?

Saturday 15 October 2011

Abingdon School

We were delighted to welcome so many OAs back to School for the 2011 OA Open Afternoon and OA Club Annual Dinner. The main afternoon attraction was the annual 1st XV fixture against Radley College, taking place this year at home. Dozens of OAs returned to School to cheer the Abingdon 1st XV on to their resounding 27-13 victory against our biggest local rivals. (Please see the main Abingdon School website for a full match report and photographs.)

After the game, tea was served in the Hospitality Suite of the new Sports Centre, still a novelty for many who hadn’t visited the School since its opening in 2008. Many OAs from across the years also took the opportunity to so on a tour of the site as it is today with a volunteer guide from amongst the current boarders.

Following an afternoon of high spirits and glorious sunshine, over 50 OAs rallied themselves, along with partners and members of Common Room (both past and present), for the Annual Dinner - to reminisce and to celebrate Abingdon’s long-standing tradition of rugby. We welcomed Jon Gabitass (governor and former Second Master) as guest-of-honour along with other former rugby coaches David Crawford, Stuart Hamilton and Steven Page plus Chris Biggs, Keith and Audrey Hasnip and Bill and Angela Potter. We were also joined by current Common Room members Andrew Hall, Andrew Broadbent, Peter Coke and the riotously popular Jeff Drummond-Hay. (A full copy of the guest list is still available.)

After dinner, guests were taken on a whistle-stop tour of the History of Abingdon Rugby with short floor speeches by 1st XV players spanning seven decades, beginning with Basil Margrave (1947) and finishing with Max Wood (2007). Our thanks to all our speakers for sharing their fond memories and hilarious anecdotes of life on the rugby pitch and off. Many thanks also to Sarah Wearne, the School’s Archivist, for compiling the slideshow of archive photographs, depicting rugby at Abingdon over the years. (OAs are welcome to download this presentation as a pdf.) We were very pleased to host mini-reunions for the teams of 1979, 1982 and 1989. ‘Team photos’ were taken at the end of the evening, though not uploaded to this photo gallery, are available electronically from the OA Office.

Thank you to everyone who attended this event and made it such a splendid occasion. If you would be interested in getting your former team mates together to repeat the experience in a few years’ time, then please contact us in the OA Office.

Friday 7 October 2011

Abingdon School

It was a great pleasure to see the solid foundations laid at the OA Club’s first professional networking event for law (in September 2009) built upon so successfully at the second dinner, hosted by David Morris (1959) on Friday 7 October 2011 which, this time, took place at the School.

The event proved incredibly popular with current pupils, seeing over 30 current boys and recent leavers signing up for the chance to network with OAs and current parents already established in the legal sector. (A full guest list for this event can be viewed online.)

The OA Club is very grateful to Jonathan Gold (1988, former OA Club President) and Jonathan Lipman (1986) who arrived early to lead an informal question-and-answer session on the ‘nuts and bolts’ of a career in law for current pupils. This was followed by a reception in the Sports Centre Hospitality Suite and dinner in the School’s dining hall. After the meal, there followed a short series of floor speeches outlining various different career paths available within the legal profession, kicking off with a lively account by David Morris. Mike Stevens (1968), in his capacity as incoming OA Club President, rounded off the evening with a vote of thanks.

We are very grateful to David, for his excellent hosting, and of course to Mike, Jonathan and Jonathan for all their contributions. Also on behalf of the School, our thanks are due to all those OAs and parents who chose to support the OA Club’s career networking initiative by attending this event.

Photographs from the event are now available and our final word of thanks goes to Zong Hao Tan (Upper Sixth) for offering us his services as a photographer.

Twenty years on, the ‘class of’ 1991 returned to Abingdon to see how much the School and their former class mates had changed.

A group of 38 OAs plus partners gathered for a tour of the site followed by a drinks reception and formal dinner. The party numbered over 50 and also included several members of staff, past and present: Bill and Angela Potter, Munna Mitra, Ian and Jenny Fishpool, Nick Revill and Andrew Broadbent. During their tour of the Sports Centre the group were also delighted to encounter Jeff Drummond-Hay. We were also pleased to welcome, unusually for an OA reunion, an ex-head boy of Pangbourne College. Alex Tate, who joined Abingdon as Housemaster of Crescent and teacher of History in September 2011, was a direct contemporary of these 1991 leavers and remembers many names and faces from encounters both on and off the sports field. (A full guest list is available to download.)

A wonderful sense of cameraderie pervaded the atmosphere of the whole event. Every stage of the evening was characterised by lively chatter and fond remembrances. Ian Fishpool, who led the tour, confessed it had been a struggle to keep the party moving around the site, since each momentary pause gave rise to another round of reminiscences.

Our thanks go to Pete Mildenhall (1991) for initiating and co-ordinating the function (all the way from Australia where he and his family are now living). We owe a big thank you also to Ian Fishpool for leading the tour and for his kind words after dinner. The show was, however, undoubtedly stolen by the booming voice and sparkling wit of the Reverend Munna Mitra, who really did bring the house down with his very touching but incredibly humorous stroll down memory lane.

We hope that you enjoy viewing the photographs from this event. We are very grateful to Zong Hao Tan (upper sixth), who came along as photographer for the night. Full-sized version of these pictures are available from the OA Office.

This has been by far the most successful year group reunion the OA Club has seen for some time and we would very much like the formula replicated for future year groups. All we need now is a volunteer to marshall the troops from 1992…

We enjoyed glorious sunshine throughout the day and were particularly pleased to see so many friends and family members (including dogs!) turn out to support the players. Despite valiant efforts from both the parents’ team (captained by Doug Terry) and the OA team (captained by Graham Scott), the trophy was finally carried off by the School team (captained by Joshua Bull).

Special thanks go to Julian Shellard and Anne Smithson, who presented the trophy in memory of her husband; to Doug Terry for sterling efforts in assembling a parents’ side; to our two umpires – Rodney Pitt (1961) and David Scott; and to Andrew Hall and Andrew Broadbent from the sports department, without whom the day simply would not be possible.

Old Abingdonian Nathaniel Watkins (2010) recently celebrated his first class debut with a 5 wicket haul against LV County championship side Yorkshire for the Durham University Centre of Excellence squad. Nathaniel, who left Abingdon in 2010, where he was the School’s 1st XI captain, has been playing in the side’s reputable academy side, following in the footsteps of Andrew Stauss and Nasser Hussain.

Of his achievement Nathaniel said, “It was a real plus point to have even made the side against Yorkshire so taking five wickets really put the icing on the cake. I’ve worked really hard since arriving at Durham and look forward to testing myself against more professional opposition.”

Nathaniel, who played his cricket alongside fellow OA, Joshua Smith (2010), who has also made the Durham side, praised the role the School had in his development: “The seven seasons of cricket I spent at Abingdon really gave me the opportunities and platform to develop my game.”

Nathaniel and Joshua are now both in the squad for Durham’s next game vs Loughborough UCCE in the MCC universities championship on 13 June 2011.

It was fantastic to see so many Abingdon Geographers - past and present - come together to share their passion for their subject on Friday 24 June 2011. We welcomed back around 30 OAs and former members of staff for the event - a final guest list can be viewed online.

The evening began in the CMR with a thought-provoking address by Mark Lynas (High Tide: News from a warming world (2004) and Six Degrees: Our future on a hotter planet (2007)) entitled, “Are environmentalists really helping the planet?”

Unfortunately heavy rain thwarted our original hopes of enjoying drinks and a barbecue in the balmy sunshine and frangrant surroundings of the beautiful gardens outside the School’s dining hall. The weather did not, however, have a dampening effect on the spirit of the event and the fond reminiscences and lively discussion continued (indoors) well into the evening.

We’re very grateful to Zong Hao Tan (Lower Sixth) for acting as our photographer at this event. If you would like to receive full-sized version of any of the images, please contact the OA Office and we will put you in touch with him directly.

Friday 11 March 2011

Abingdon School

A diverse group of OAs, parents, pupils and members of staff met at School on Friday 11 March for a professional networking event, hosted by Gareth Morris (1976), OA Club President, and at which we welcomed John Smith, Chief Executive of BBC Worldwide, as a guest speaker.

This event drew together members of the Abingdon School community with an interest in ‘creative communication’. The guest list included 15 current pupils, 5 parents and a truly wide-ranging selection OAs, whose leaving years stretched from 1957 (Richard Morse) to 2005 (Tom Swarbrick). There were professionals representing a huge variety of employment sectors including marketing, advertising, public relations, publishing and the media.

The dinner afforded OAs an opportunity to come back to School and catch up with other alumni with a similar professional background. The event also provided current sixth formers and younger OAs with the chance to chat informally with more experienced practitioners from an employment sector they might be considering. This, in turn, provided the more established professionals with an opportunity to identify young talent and do some networking of their own.

At the welcome reception, all the established professionals introduced themselves with a ‘nugget’ of useful advice for today’s jobseeker. Between courses, the seating arrangements were rotated to facilitate the most effective networking experience possible. After dinner, John Smith gave a short and entertaining address on the diversity and enormous scope available to those hoping to build a career in a creative industry (like the media), which sparked a vigorous and wide-ranging discussion, touching on many issues from tips for getting onto the career ladder to the challenges and stimulations of a career in ‘business’.

Our special thanks go to Gareth Morris, for hosting the event, to John Smith, for his apt and witty address, and to all those OAs and parents who supported this event, which is part of the OA Club’s series of prefessional networking dinners.
