Lord Crisp KCB
Friday 23 March 2012

6.30 pm Lecture, 7.15 pm Reception, 8.00 pm Dinner - Abingdon School
As part of the fantastic program of professional dinners the OA club laid on the biennial Medicine Dinner, our host for the evening was the very gracious Professor Mike Stevens (1968), who with continued support of Dr Tim Gunn brought together a fantastically varied and interesting guest list. With the evening following a very similar format to many of our other professional dinners, a speech from our honoured guest, followed by a reception and then a superb dinner.
Lord Crisp treated current pupils, OAs, parents and a fantastic selection of professionals to a tremendously engaging talk on the potential for education in the medical world from low-income countries. We were lucky to have this opportunity to listen to a very forward thinking talk exploring a progressive topic that is clearly integral to the development of medicine in the modern world. What was really nice to see was the level of challenging questions that were put forward by everyone in attendance clearly showing just how thought provoking the subject matter is.
The questions posed led very nicely into the second part of the evening, a reception giving a great platfrom for discussion of a very intriguing issue that had clearly ignited interest of all the attendees. As various members of the medical community came together the specialisms that could be found were totally diverse and gave boys a fantastic insight into future career paths. This presented an opportunity which is truly inspiring to most boys as they are able to converse with OAs who have gone through the exact same process giving a much more personal touch to the evening.
To round off the evening a delightful three-course meal was provided for everyone, allowing the boys to garner a slightly more individual perspective of medicine through the more personal setting of dinner. Boys were encouraged to get to know their future peers as it certainly gave the insight to encourage prospective medics to look into a specific area of medicine. A truly fantastic evening all round, for those interested in being involved in the next medicine dinner or other such professional dinners such as: Modern Languages, Law, City & Business, Engineering or Computer Technology then we would love to hear from you.
