The third annual Griffen Rugby 7s Tournament, hosted by the Old Abingdonian Club, was held on Sunday 14 March 2010 at Abingdon School.
Teams of Old Abingdonians came together to battle it out against teams from Magdalen, St Edward's, Bloxham and Solihull. There were three 'home' teams including one combined team of Abingdon alumni and Common Room and one conglomerate alumni side ('Oakthorpe') which included a healthy proportion of OAs.
The day was a great success, helped very much the mild and sunny weather. All seven teams faced each other in the morning in the initial round-robin stage which was played in a single pool. (The grid of results is available here.) After lunch the top two pairs of teams played again, competing for the cup and shield.
Teams exhibited an impressive level of skill and tremendous sportsmanship throughout the tournament. There was a pervading sense of great camaraderie as the Old Silhillians battled their way to victory over the Old Bloxhamists for the cup and Oakthorpe likewise beat St Edward's in the shield competition.
The prizes was presented by the Headmaster, Mark Turner, who commented once more on the great atmosphere and pleasing standard of rugby on show.
Special thanks on this occasion must go to the referees, two of whom stepped in as replacements at the very last moment and enabled the tournament to go ahead.
Photographs from the tournament can now be viewed on this page. If you would like full-size copies of any of these image, please do not hesitate to contact the OA Office.
