6 - 15 July 2009
Thirteen boys accompanied by four members of staff travelled to the Eastern European country of Moldova at the start of the summer holidays as part of Abingdon's ongoing link with the charity Agape.
Ten of the students were focussed on organising activities in the village of Ialoveni: mornings were spent at the Agape Community Centre providing games, craft sessions, and sport for younger children, while afternoons were based at the local school where the boys taught English and took on Moldovans their own age in various sporting activities. One of the highlights was the fiercely competitive England v Moldova football match in which, after conceding an early goal, England fought back to win 4-2.
At the same time three members of the Abingdon Film Unit were recording footage for a documentary about the life of a typical Moldovan family and the challenges they face.
There was also time for visits to the capital city of Chisinau, the wine cellars of Milestii Mici, and the beach of Vadul lui Voda where the concept of rounders was introduced to the Moldovan children.
The trip ended with a short concert at the Community Centre which featured sketches, music, and an attempt by the group to dance the Moldovan Hora.
Once again we were made extremely welcome by our host famlies in Ialoveni and by the Agape staff. The boys who came thoroughly enjoyed the experience but also made a big difference to the lives of those less fortunate than themselves.
