Both the U16 and U14 hockey squads are county hockey champions and progress through to the regional rounds after some impressive performances in the county rounds. It is the first time that Abingdon have won two out of the three county hockey tournaments and is testament to the hard work that these players are putting in on a daily basis.
In the U14 tournament, Abingdon won the title for the second successive year without losing a match. They played some excellent hockey to win the competition without conceding a goal, beating Radley 1 - 0, St Edward's 5 - 0, MCS 3 - 0 and Bloxham 3 - 0 . Dominic MacLachlan led the side superbly and linked up well with Oliver Lovibond to score a number of vital goals.
The U16 tournament was a tighter contest, but Abingdon took the title on goal difference. On freezing day at Banbury Road, Abingdon started slowly with a team that had not had the opportunity tot play together. The went 2 - 0 down early against St Edward's, before coming back into the game. They improved throughout the tournament to finish the day with a fine 2 - 0 win over MCS and edge the title to progress through to the regional rounds. The U15 players stepped up well, but there were many fine performances from the current U16 squad and their hard work over the first half of the season ha been rewarded.
In the Independent Schools Hockey League, Abingdon U15 A and U14 A are looking good at the top of the table. Both teams have beaten Marlborough, St Edward's and Radley , with the U14A team clocking up 17 goals in three games. These leagues and results can be viewed at www.fixtureslive.com - Independent Schools Hockey League.
The U15A an U14A teams are now looking forward to a tour to Stamford School, Rugby School and Loughborough University at the start of half term, before embarking on the all important regional hockey rounds and the remaining four fixtures in the ISHL.
