Over the exeat weekend 13 boys in the third year studying Latin and Classical Civilisation travelled up to Hadrian’s Wall accompanied by Dr Ridd and Dr Burnand. It was a busy three days as we visited a large range of Roman sites along the course of the wall, with a particular focus on forts such as those at Arbeia, Housteads and Chesters. We were also lucky to see the benefits of the £6M of lottery money spent on the newly renovated Roman Army and Vindolanda museums. The latter was particularly striking for its new display of some of the famous wooden tablets which have survived with their writing intact from the 1st century BC. The weather was kind and allowed a splendid walk along the wall heading west from Housesteads, and we were very well looked after at the English Heritage hostel inside the remains of the Birdoswald Fort.
