Week 4 of the football season saw the top four senior sides begin their Thames Valley Football League campaigns away at Reading Blue Coat School. In what was anticipated to be a tough block for the Abingdon sides, the 4th XI and 3rd XI put in commendable performances despite suffering defeats, whilst a resilient and hard working 2nd XI thoroughly deserved their 0-0 stalemate. Having conceded early on, the 1st XI deserved their Paddy Leggett equaliser as they grew into the game, however conceding just before half time knocked the stuffing out of the Abingdon side, who struggled to respond to the pace of the Reading Blue Coat side resulting in
a defeat.

Moving onto the weekend, and Saturday morning got underway with the Middle and Lower School taking on Reading Grammar School. The U12s, on their second outing for the school, got Abingdon off to a flier with 5-0 and 7-1 wins for the A and B teams respectively; a B-team hat-trick for Sam Houldsworth-Bianek the highlight. Unfortunately the U13s despite a valiant effort were not at their best, with both the A and B teams suffering defeats. Moving into the U14s and the goals were shared as the U14 A team secured a 4-2 victory, whilst the U14 Bs scored a hatful on their way to a very convincing win. Moving into the U15s, and again despite suffering defeat the A and B teams both should draw a great amount of confidence from the progress they have made thus far this term, and a positive result is just around the corner. The same should also be said for the U16 As who despite dominating possession and moving the ball well suffered a narrow 3-1 defeat against a very direct Reading Grammar side. A 4-1 win for the U16 Bs leaves them with one win, one draw and one loss so far this season.

Moving into the seniors, and the Abingdon sides continued their Thames Valley Football League campaigns this time against Shiplake College. The 4th XI got off to a flier, and having been 7-0 up at half time secured a convincing win against their Shiplake opposition, whilst the 3rd XI enjoyed the space and width of Waste Court Field, also securing a 6-2 win. The second XI continued their unbeaten run for the first half of term, as a Matheo Charrier-Chardin hat-trick secured a 4-0 win.

Finally the 1st team were looking for a reaction to bounce back from the disappointment of Wednesday’s defeat, and that was certainly achieved. The Abingdon side moved the ball feely and played with greater confidence as they secured a convincing 6-1 win, including a double from Oise Emafo and a goal worthy of any goal of the month from Angus Williams.

Abingdon now looks forward to its very own Friday Night Lights as Abingdon 1st XI welcome MCS to Tilsley Park on Friday at 6pm.

Thank you for all your support on the touchline.
