European translating competition

24 November 2011

Four upper sixth and a lower sixth linguist took part today in Juvenes Translatores, a translation competition run by the European Commission. Now in its 5th year, this competition is open to pupils across the European Union who are born in 1994 and who are keen to develop their language skills. Not only does this competition promote intercultural exchanges and understanding, it also raises awareness about translation studies and the ever growing need for translators thoughout Europe.

Ben Bryant, translating from German, together with George Apps, Guy Bud, Rory Marsh and Mathew Hartshorne, translating from French, spent two hours coming to grips with this year's texts on the theme of volunteering, as the European Union is celebrating and promoting volunteering in 2011. Their efforts are now on their way to Brussels by registered mail and we wait in anticipation the results that will be published by the Directorate General for Translating in February 2012. The lucky winner will attend an awards ceremony in Brussels in March.
