22 - 29 October 2010
On Friday 22 October, 57 boys and 6 staff set off to Italy for a week visiting classical sites around the Bay of Naples and Rome. There was a packed itinerary including famous sites such as Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum, but also less familiar places, such as the villas at Stabiae and Oplontis and the imperial ‘dining-cave’ at Sperlonga.
In Rome we saw the Colosseum, the Forum, the Pantheon and the Ara Pacis as well as travelling out to visit the port town of Ostia and Hadrian’s massive villa at Tivoli. Not only were the boys excellent ambassadors for the school, but several of the U6 spoke knowledgably to the others about the sites we saw in Rome.
In the quiz on the final night of the trip, Oliver Stanier’s team emerged triumphant in their knowledge of what we had seen: Oliver was ably supported by Sandy Gildersleeves, Omri Faraggi, Matthew Wyatt, Rhodri Lewis and Thomas Ling.
