Christchurch Bay visit

4 October 2010

Sustainable coastal management?

The Lower sixth geographers, accompanied by ICF, PDBG, ATH and MDP, spent today examining the impacts of coastal management strategies in Christchurch Bay as part of the AS geography course. A numbers of locations were visited including  Barton-on-Sea, Keyhaven and Hurst Spit: this varied coastline certainly shows the difficulties of finding suitable sustainable management strategies.

We have been running a field trip to this section of coastline for a number of years now and it is fascinating to see how the morphology of the cliffs changes so rapidly from year to year: perhaps not quite so fast as the developments taking place surrounding the Olympic park in London - the next field trip the lower sixth are to embark upon in mid-October.
