Captain Eric Harvey, MC and Bar

Remember Captain Eric Howard Harvey, MC and Bar, and the 122 members of the Abingdon School community who lost their lives in two world wars.

Eric Harvey was educated at Abingdon, 1903 – 1908, as were two of his brothers, Roy, 1905 – 1910, and Bernard, 1909 – 1911. A natural sportsman, he represented the School at football, cricket and athletics.

Having enlisted on the outbreak of war, Eric Harvey was commissioned into the Gloucestershire Regiment in October 1915.

In August 1916 he was awarded a Military Cross for leading a successful bombing attack against an enemy trench. In November 1916 he was invalided home with shell shock and trench fever. Passed fit for service in September 1917, he was wounded in April 1918. He was promoted captain in May.

Returning to active service he was killed by machine gun fire on 30 September 1918. Shortly after his death it was announced that he had been awarded a bar to his Military Cross.

Eric Harvey is buried in Estaires Communal Cemetery Extension. The photograph shows the original wooden cross that marked his grave.
