Cambridge Union Schools Debating Competition

16 November 2011

Eight members of the Debating Society today travelled to Oxford to take part in a round of the prestigious Cambridge Union Debating Competition, a nationwide competition open to all schools. Representing us were Will Hewstone, Tom Earl, Zander Cornish-Moore, Jacob Diamond, TC Chu, Jack Williams, Olly Jackson, and Michael Bicarregui.

We were generously hosted by Cheney School, who also bagged most of the places in the next round with their fearsome debating prowess, but the Abingdon teams performed strongly with many teams coming as nail-bitingly close runners up in their rounds. Our top team was described by the judge as an 'excellent team' of 'promising and intelligent speakers' who would only improve with experience. It was an extra pleasure to meet up and compare notes with our debating friends from St Helen's at the competition, fresh from the joint debating workshop we hosted last month.
