Abingdon pupil Thomas Salt competed earlier this year in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge, a brand new competition launched to coincide with the 2011 International Year of Chemistry. From January to June there is a monthly online challenge, open to anyone, any age, from anywhere in the world. In June there is also a written exam for students in Year 12 attending schools in the UK.
Thomas was one of a select group in the country to achieve the top award, the Roentgenium award. His success was celebrated last week as he was invited by the MP for Cambridge, Dr Julian Huppert, to a reception and presentation at the Houses of Parliament, where he received a crystal trophy for his efforts. He also had the opportunity to look around and sit in the House of Lords. As a result of his success Thomas was invited to a chemistry camp at Cambridge University where he had the opportunity to take part in some advanced practical work in their laboratories.
