The arms of the Borough of Abingdon
Vert, a cross patonce or between four crosses pattee argent
The Borough of Abingdon adopted the cross patonce of Abingdon Abbey in its own coat of arms. At the Borough’s incorporation in 1556, the Mayor and principal Burgesses were appointed visitors of the School and charged with the appointment of the master, the supervision of the School’s standards of achievement, its finances and the maintenance of its buildings. In 1860, the Corporation were replaced as School Visitors by a Board of Governors. 2006 marks the 450th anniversary of the incorporation of the Borough of Abingdon.
