The summer term presents challenges for weekly music making, since we have lost so many pupils in both Fifth and Upper Sixth years to Study Leave, something that leaves our ensemble rehearsals in a somewhat depleted state. Inevitably, the music comes together at the final rehearsals, which can be somewhat nerve-racking!

Nevertheless, it is a credit to many of these boys and their teachers that rehearsals could continue and produce such a fantastic evening of Light Music in a concert that was enjoyed by the large audience that attended. The concert also gave us a fitting opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of so many boys for whom this was their swan song.

The concert programme demonstrates the wide range of light music performed by all the senior ensembles and vocal groups. From film we heard Skyfall and The Big Country, from TV, Match of the Day and Star Trek, from Gospel, Down by the Riverside, from the Charts, Yesterday, Lady Gaga, Uptown Girl and ABBA, from the Folk scene, Will ye Go, Lassie?, Easy Listening, Burt Bacharach, Jazz, Miles Davis and Henry Mancini and from Light Opera, Offenbach’s Can-Can.

Particularly welcome was the distinguished participation of our new Headmaster, Mr Windsor, who joined the chamber orchestra as a double bassist and the Gospel Choir as a bass. What a motivational fillip that represents for our gifted and hard-working musicians!
