An Evening with Henry Olonga - Talk, Song and Art

Henry Olonga
5 May 2006
In 1995 Henry Olonga was both the first black cricketer, and the youngest ever player, aged 18, to play cricket for Zimbabwe. As a fast bowler, he took 126 wickets in 30 tests and 50 One Day internationals, until the 2003 World Cup, when he and Andy Flower controversially wore black armbands in protest against President Mugabe's government. He had to flee the country and is now pursuing a new career as a singer and an artist.
In the Amey Theatre, he sang and spoke movingly of his life, including cricket and that protest, revealing what a remarkable man he is: talented, intelligent, articulate and cheerful, with Christian faith, moral principles and integrity that have led him to stand up for what is right, even though it meant risking his life and losing his country, home and some friends. We were privileged to meet and be inspired by such a great man. A memorable evening indeed.
